About FSA & HSA Benefits
Did you know you can use FSA & HSA benefits for lice removal?
Understanding FSA/HSA Eligibility for Lice Treatment
Wondering why lice treatments qualify for tax-advantaged spending? It comes down to their classification as a medical necessity. Because the CDC recognizes a lice infestation as a legitimate medical condition, the IRS (under Code Section 213(d)) allows these expenses to be covered by your health accounts.
Unlike standard shampoos used for grooming, these products are specifically formulated to eliminate a parasitic condition. Thanks to the CARES Act of 2020, you no longer need a prescription to use your funds for over-the-counter (OTC) options.

What Qualifies for FSA / HSA?
Most treatments designed to kill active lice and their eggs (nits) are eligible. This includes:
- OTC Medications: Products containing Permethrin (like Nix) or Pyrethrin (like Rid).
- Prescription Options: Stronger treatments such as Sklice or Natroba.
- Treatment Kits: Kits that include specialized removal combs alongside medicinal shampoos.
What is Excluded from FSA / HSA?
Items used for prevention rather than treatment typically do not qualify. These include:
- Daily shampoos or conditioners marketed to "repel" lice.
- Standalone accessories like combs or essential oils not sold as part of a medicinal kit.
- The "cosmetic" portion of any bundled kits that include non-medical hair care items.
